On Sunday October 28th, 2012 B-Shift was dispatched to a report of a bedroom on fire in the 12500 block of Jefferson Rd. Upon arrival Squad 2162 found smoke coming from a small one story residence and immeadiately stretched an attack line for search, rescue and fire attack. The fire was quickly brought under control with one line. Clay Engine 245 assisted with salvage and overhaul. Clay Medic 45 provided fire stand-by and rehab. The fire is currently under investigation by the Penn Twp. FD, St. Joseph County Police and the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office Fire Investigators.
On Thursday October 25th, A-Shift Responded to a report of a fully involved shed fire in District #3 at 57900 Beech Rd. Upon arrival companies found the barn fully-involved and spreading to the near by trees. Companies quickly knocked down the fire with a 1.75″ handline but the shed and its contents were a total loss. The cause of the fire is thought to be a tractor in the shed and the fire burned so quickly due to the extremely high winds that day.
On Sunday October 21st, 2012 B-Shift responded to a report of a fire on the outside of the house in the 54600 block of Sunbeam Ct. Upon arrival Squad 2162 found a small fire that was mostly out on the outside of the house near the air conditioning electrical control box. Penn Twp. firefighters finished extinguishing the fire and checking for extension with their thermal imaging cameras. The cause was electrical in nature.
The Penn Twp. FD opened its Live Fire Training Facility on 9/17/12. This facility is made up of 40′ cargo containers that department members have modified while on duty to be compliant with NFPA 1403 in order to be used as Live Fire Training Facility. Currently tihs is only one of two live fire training facilities in St. Joseph County, the other being the Clay Fire Territory Facility which is also the IDHS District 2 Training Center.
This facility features multiple burn locations, on the 1st floor, and the 2nd floor will have a firefighter survival/SCBA confidence prop at a later date. On the evening of October 19th, 2012 B-Shift was dispatched to a garage fire in the 10000 block of Curtis in Penn District #4. Upon arrival Squad 2162 found a garage that had smoke coming from it, but the owner had already put out the fire. Penn units assisted with smoke removal, overhaul, and fire investigation.
