Late afternoon on 1-3-18 C-Shift Squad 14, Tanker 13, Tanker 14 and Battalion Chief 5 (Kazmierzak) responded to this large factory fire. Units operated at the scene for approx. 10 hours with Squad 14 pumping for about 8 hours straight supplying a ladder and numerous handlines. BC5 was the charlie division.
A large fire at a business in Elkhart county continued to burn nearly 8 hours after it started.
Fire Chief Rich Newman of Cleveland Township Fire Department says crews were called to a fire at Cana Cabinetry around 3:30 pm.
When firefighters got there, they saw flames and smoke coming out of the front end of the plant.
Officials say the building contained several flammable objects like lacquer, acetone and wood.
It also housed a few propane tanks, which crews say, caused a few small explosions.
Chief Newman says there were employees inside the building during the fire but they escaped unharmed.
However, two firefighters were injured trying to put out those flames.
Officials confirmed one was taken to the hospital for a ground level fall and the other injured fireman was sent back to the station after suffering from frostbite.
Newman says 13 different fire crews responded to the scene.
Many of them transported water as there weren’t any hydrants nearby for at least 2,000 to 3,000 feet.
